Month 1: Introduction to Carpentry

Carpentry Shop Safety

  • Proper use and care of hand tools (hammer, saw, chisels, planes, etc.)
  • Identification of common wood types (teak, shisham, mango, etc.)
  • Taking measurements and marking wood

Month 2: Basic Joinery Techniques

  • Introduction to joinery (different ways to connect pieces of wood)
  • Making butt joints, dado joints, and lap joints
  • Using woodworking adhesives
  • Sharpening hand tools

Month 3: Using Power Tools Safely

  • Safety precautions for using power tools (circular saw, jigsaw, drill, etc.)
  • Learning how to rip, cut, and drill wood with power tools
  • Maintenance of power tools

Month 4: Building Simple Projects

  • Building a birdhouse
  • Constructing a bookshelf
  • Creating a small cabinet

Month 5: Introduction to Wood Finishing

  • Types of wood finishes (stain, varnish, paint, etc.)
  • Applying wood finishes safely and effectively
  • Sanding and preparing wood for finishing

Month 6: Project Portfolio Development

  • Students will design and build a final project of their choice
  • The project will showcase the skills learned throughout the course

One-Year Carpenter Course Outline

The first six months of the one-year program will cover the same topics as the 6-month course outlined above. The second six months will focus on more advanced carpentry skills and techniques.

Month 7: Staircase Construction

  • Different types of stairs (straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, etc.)
  • Calculating stair dimensions
  • Building a simple staircase

Month 8: Door and Window Construction

  • Making and fitting doors and windows
  • Using hinges and other hardware
  • Weatherproofing doors and windows

Month 9: Advanced Joinery Techniques

  • Making mortise and tenon joints
  • Building dovetail joints
  • Using dowel joints

Month 10: Furniture Making

  • Introduction to furniture design
  • Building a simple chair or table
  • Upholstery basics (optional)

Month 11: Cabinetmaking

  • Building cabinets for kitchens, bathrooms, or other rooms
  • Using cabinet hardware (drawer slides, hinges, etc.)
  • Installing cabinets

Local Woods and Sustainability (Both Courses):

  • Incorporate a section on commonly available local woods in Pakistan (e.g., Sheesham, Mango, Neem) with discussions on their properties, sustainability considerations, and responsible sourcing practices.

Business Skills for Carpenters (One-Year Course):

  • Dedicate a module to equip students with basic business skills like:
    • Estimating project costs (materials, labor)
    • Marketing carpentry services
    • Client communication and project management

Advanced Finishing Techniques (One-Year Course):
